The Space

Many lovely traditional features have been retained here, such as the arch-shaped windows from the one-time cart sheds, from which the property takes its name. And the former grain loft is now a fabulous, open plan sitting room and study upstairs, with sea views across to the Isle of May. French doors open out onto a lovely little veranda facing east: the perfect spot to enjoy a morning coffee and get the binoculars out for some bird or dolphin watching! In the winter months there’s a log burner to keep everyone toasty.

Both bedrooms are on the ground floor. The master bedroom is light and spacious with Velux windows and French doors. There is also a dressing area with built in wardrobes, and an en suite bathroom with a roll top bath and shower, along with twin, beautifully hand crafted, stone wash basins.

The second bedroom also has a roll top bath which, for a touch of luxury, is placed in front of an elaborate gilt mirror. Here too are French doors with shutters and a built-in wardrobe with mirrored oak doors.

There’s a fabulous spiral timber staircase (engraved with a famous quote from Lao Tzu: “Even the longest journey begins with the first step”) which connects the downstairs accommodation with the open plan living areas on the first floor. At the top is a newel, also made of wood, which is a scale model carved into the shape of the ruined St Andrews’ cathedral spire! Even the bannister has been crafted from Arctic wood washed up on the beach nearby.

There’s a small, east facing garden with lawn and mature plants, grasses, and trees leading to a parking area for 2 cars. The west facing courtyard area catches the afternoon and evening sun and is a delightful place for enjoying an indulgent cocktail!

LOCATION

The Arches has a wonderful setting on one of the prettiest coastal regions of Scotland. Located on the east coast, in the Kingdom of Fife, this gorgeous home is situated within a pretty steading development at Caiplie, in the region known locally as the East Neuk of Fife.

This area has a rich history and boasts a number of charming fishing villages built around picturesque harbours and sandy unspoilt beaches. The Fife Coastal Path passes along this shoreline and provides a convenient pedestrian route from Caiplie to both Anstruther (1.5 miles) and Crail (2 miles), passing the Caiplie Caves with a history dating from the 9th century.

Crail, to the east, is the smaller of the two neighbouring towns and has good local services including a supermarket. To the west, Anstruther has a working harbour, and excellent facilities for pleasure boats.  It too has many quality shops, restaurants and take aways and a large supermarket.

There are many golf courses in the area including Kingsbarns, Elie, Crail, and those in the world-famous university town of St Andrews which is only 10 miles away. Additionally, the area has a plethora of award-winning restaurants ranging from great fish and chip bars to upmarket Michelin-starred restaurants.

There’s lots to explore nearby too with fun activities for all ages including Scotland’s Secret Bunker (15 mins away), Scottish Fisheries Museum (10 mins) and St Andrews Aquarium (20 mins). Children and families will love the clean, sandy beaches and country parks nearby. Adults can also enjoy visits to local gin and whisky distilleries.

And of course, there are various fun activities on the water too. Daily boats trip run to the Isle of May (5 miles offshore) with opportunities to see puffins, guillemots, razorbills, dolphins, porpoises and even the odd whale!

Edinburgh is not far away for a wonderful day trip and is very accessible via the A92 dual carriageway connection from Glenrothes. Dundee is also not far away (25 miles) and has a wealth of visitor attractions such as the V & A museum.

In terms of getting here, access by rail, road and air is good. Edinburgh International Airport is just 45 miles away and Dundee Airport (27 miles) has scheduled flights to London City. Cupar and Leuchars railway stations (both 18 miles away) are on the main Aberdeen to London line and provide a fast link to Edinburgh.
