The Space

The open plan living area makes an immediate impression, with full height ceilings, skylights overhead, polished concrete floors and a beautifully simple layout that feels bright, airy and calm. The interiors are confident without being overdone, pairing soft blue tones, natural timber, exposed stone and carefully chosen vintage pieces to give the space warmth and individuality.

The handcrafted oak kitchen is compact but well equipped, with a Belfast sink, electric AGA, microwave, fridge with freezer compartment and half size dishwasher, making it easy to settle in for a few nights or a longer stay. A dining table for two sits within the main space, while the sitting area offers a comfortable sofa, occasional seating and a Smart TV. French doors open directly onto the private terrace, creating an easy connection to the outdoors and bringing in plenty of natural light.

The bedroom continues the same calm, design-led feel, with zip and link beds that can be arranged as either a super king or twins depending on your stay. The room is finished with quality linen, thoughtful storage and a restful atmosphere that makes it easy to switch off completely.

The bathroom is bold and beautifully done, with polished finishes, Heritage fittings and a bath with shower over. Throughout the Bothy, the finish feels carefully judged, balancing simplicity with comfort and just enough personality to make it stand out.

Outside

To the rear of the Bothy is a private terrace with outdoor seating for two, overlooking the paddock and wider grounds. It is a lovely spot for morning coffee, a quiet glass of wine or simply enjoying the stillness of the East Lothian countryside.

Guests also have shared access to the wider amenities and grounds at Papple Steading. These include open paddock space, woodland areas, a firepit seating area and plenty of room to walk, explore and enjoy the setting. There is also access to the cart shed games area, with table tennis and table football providing an extra layer of fun for guests wanting a more relaxed, sociable stay.

Set within the old Whittingehame Estate, Papple Steading is a wonderful base for exploring East Lothian. The surrounding area offers beautiful beaches, renowned golf courses, excellent walking and cycling routes, charming villages and some of the best food and drink spots in the region. It is equally well placed for slower days spent close to home, with the Papple grounds themselves offering space, quiet and a real sense of escape.

Edinburgh is within easy reach by car or train, making Shepherd’s Bothy an ideal choice for guests who want countryside calm without feeling cut off.
