The Perfect Family Getaway to Balmullo, Fife

There’s something refreshing about escaping to the countryside – space to slow down, breathe a little deeper, and enjoy the simple things. If that sounds like your kind of break, Moonzie Mill House might be just the place. Tucked away near Balmullo, this characterful home makes a brilliant base for a family trip to Fife. Think slow breakfasts in a kitchen designed for grand gatherings, evenings around the fire pit, and plenty of time to explore in between.

We’ve put together a four-day family itinerary filled with favourite local spots to help you make the most of your time here.

Day 1: Cupar, Wildlife, and a Cosy Evening In

Spanish Baked Eggs

Start your day the right way with breakfast or brunch at Number 10 in Cupar (breakfast menu served until 11.30am). Choose from fluffy pancakes – sweet or savoury – full breakfasts or poached eggs and avocado. You’ll want the fuel, because next up is a visit to the Scottish Deer Centre.

This isn’t just about seeing deer up close (though that’s pretty amazing in itself). You’ll also find wildcats, wolves, and birds of prey. The kids can run wild in the play areas, and there are even ranger-led feeding sessions to keep things interactive.

After a morning of wildlife encounters, head to the charming village of Falkland. It’s like stepping into a postcard – cobbled streets, historic buildings, and the perfect setting for a scenic walk up to Maspie Den. This woodland trail is full of surprises, from hidden waterfalls to caves just waiting to be explored.

By now, you’ll have earned a proper treat, and Pillars of Hercules is the place for it. This organic farm shop and café serves up excellent coffee and homemade cakes in a wonderfully laid-back setting.

On the way back to Moonzie Mill House, make a quick stop at Luvians in Cupar – a gem of a wine shop where you’ll find everything from small-batch  gins to rich, full-bodied reds. Pick up something nice for the evening ahead.

Back at the house, it’s time to unwind. Light the fire pit, pour a glass of wine, and let the kids take over the games room while you soak up the peaceful surroundings.

Day 2: St Andrews – From Sea Creatures to Steak Dinners

Eggy Bread cheesy toasties

No trip to this part of Fife is complete without a visit to St Andrews. We’ve given you two options here (I mean, ideally you’d manage to squeeze both in), as we just really can’t choose a winner!

Start the day either at St Andrews Aquarium, where you’ll meet everything from adorable seals to creepy crawlies. The kids will love the interactive exhibits, and the views over the coast are spectacular.

Or, Craigtoun Country Park, 47 acres of fun, just 2 miles from the town. During peak season, (Easter to October), you can enjoy rides on the Rio Grande miniature railway and the Puffin’ Billy road train, as well as Crazy Golf and Park Golf. There are bouncy castles and pedal cars for the little ones, and a go-kart track suitable for older children and adults.

Mid-morning calls for something sweet, so swing by Dook for cakes that are almost too pretty to eat (almost). Paired with a strong coffee, it’s the perfect pick-me-up before heading to East Sands for lunch.

Now, you can pack a picnic… but honestly, you’d be missing out if you didn’t grab a grilled cheese sandwich from the Cheesy Toast Shack. They take toasties to another level, with oozing, golden cheese and delicious flavour combinations.

On the way home, make time for a stop at Balgove Larder. Whether you fancy picking up some top-quality local produce to cook at home or treating the family to a meal at the Steak Barn – a rustic, open-sided eatery where steaks are grilled over an open wood fire—it’s genuinely a foodie’s dream.

Back at Moonzie Mill House, it’s time to wind down. Maybe a board game night, or just some time curled up with a book while the kids burn off the last of their energy in the games room.

Day 3: Sea Air, Sauna Sessions & East Neuk Wandering

Chicken Shawarma Wraps

Today’s about exploring the East Neuk — a string of charming coastal villages, around a half hour drive from Moonzie Mill House. With its mix of wild swims, local cafés and laid-back vibes, it’s well worth the trip.

Start your morning in Kingsbarns, where you’ll find a little gem right on the shoreline – Wild Scottish Sauna. It’s a wood-fired, Nordic-style sauna with huge sea-facing windows. Book a private session and alternate between the steamy warmth and bracing dips in the North Sea. It’s invigorating, peaceful, and totally unforgettable.

From there, head south along the coast to Crail, one of the East Neuk’s most picturesque villages. Pop into the Harbour Gallery Café for a relaxed brunch or coffee with views over the water. Their cakes and scones are worth the stop alone, and there’s always local art on the walls to browse while you wait.

Next up: Pittenweem, where you’ll find a tidal pool carved into the rocks. It’s a proper hidden gem – perfect for a (very refreshing) swim if you didn’t brave the sea at Kingsbarns, or just for soaking up the coastal atmosphere. A wander through the village’s narrow lanes and working harbour adds to the charm.

Just a further 10 minute drive along the road is Anstruther – world famous for their fish and chips! It’s worth the long wait in line, honest. Anstruther Fish Bar is the place that has frequently hosted celebrities such as Tom Hanks and Robert De Niro, but we think Fish and Chips on the Waterfront is just as tasty!

This town is known for serving up some of the best fish and chips in the country, grab a portion to enjoy by the harbour. Whether you sit outside with your fish supper or over at the harbour, this is a quintessential East Neuk experience – and the perfect way to end your coastal adventure.

Day 4: Beach Walks, Crepes by the Sea and the Ultimate Family Challenge!
